Work With Patrick

I am looking for meaningful ways to apply my experience and, in an effort to identify those opportunities, I created this page as a complement to my LinkedIn profile.

Do you want to know if I’d be a good fit for your organization, or would you like to work together? Read on below to see if we should chat! My email is patrick@ifroggy.com.

My Current Status

Since August, I have been an editorial consultant for CNN EPP, providing expertise around community, moderation, trust, and safety. I am also mentoring for NEW INC at the New Museum of Contemporary Art and working on my own projects, including hosting the Community Signal podcast.

I have the capacity to take on additional part-time commitments or to make room for a full-time role.

What I’m Open To

  • Online community leadership. This could include customer success, policy, retention, and trust and safety roles. Depending on the organization, this may be a Director, VP, or similar. While I love the work of community, even to the most granular detail, and I am capable of performing it, I am likely not a strong fit for an individual contributor role unless the compensation is commensurate with such roles. I am at my best when I’m providing a large impact across teams or an organization and empowering or enabling teams to achieve that impact.
  • Full-time roles. I will consider contract opportunities but the rate might not make sense. I commit to my employer, and I expect them to commit to me.
  • Part-time roles. Happy to work in consulting environments or as an advisor.
  • The organization I work for is important to me, because I plan to invest in it.
  • I have spent my entire career working remotely. I operate in a remote-first mindset. Once COVID-19 is under control, I am open to infrequent office visits if you are located in or near Los Angeles, CA.

At a Glance

  • 20+ years leading and guiding online community programs, from small organizations to household names.
  • Have built new communities from scratch with a tight budget and rebooted established communities in multi-million dollar programs.
  • Community product development expertise. Previously, I have led multiple community software migrations, including guidance of the development roadmap for a new, proprietary community software.
  • Analytics and measurement are core to what I do, to the point where I am usually the one designing and putting together the systems through which we measure impact and ROI.
  • I have developed and scaled diverse, distributed teams of full-time contributors and hundreds of volunteers around the world.
  • Author of platform policies used by global brands and independent communities. Personally involved in hundreds of thousands of individual moderation and policy decisions while managing spaces with millions of contributions.
  • Author of the book Managing Online Forums, published in 2008.
  • National speaker. Active voice within the online community space, through my personal channels, writing, and the Community Signal podcast.

Outcomes I Provide

  • Healthy, safe, impactful online communities.
  • Customer retention growth. For example, after taking over a 2 year old, stagnant community program for a well-known consumer brand, we grew active members by 587.4% in 12 months and 761.7% in 24 months, driving a substantial, measurable revenue increase.
  • Increased customer success, through channeling the collective knowledge of the community into world class educational resources that reset what success and failure looks like for customers.
  • Better products, improved by the experiences of those who use them - or those we'd like to.
  • High-performing, empowered, and engaged teams.
  • The growth of leaders within teams and organizations.
  • Customer engagement, moderation, retention, trust, and safety-related expertise.
